Teens That Mean Business

Seydou Diao is a high school junior who has an interest in entrepreneurship but didn’t have the resources or access to small business leaders. As an intern with the Teens the Means Business (“TTMB”) program, a six-week stipend-based summer internship, he was able to gain knowledge and exposure to entrepreneurship, future career opportunities, and financial education. Now that Seydou has completed the program, his financial outlook for himself and his family is brighter, and he feels more empowered as he prepares for college and college summer internships.

Since 2012, TTMB has connected over 60 youth with business leaders, owners, and professionals, who serve as both employer and mentor. The TTMB interns shadow them up to four days a week, gaining practical, hands-on experience in business operation and management. Additionally, the interns participate in a series of financial education, professional development and entrepreneurial workshops that cover everything from discovering the power of positivity, to resume writing and understanding credit and debt.

Exiting Egypt

Barbara is a long-standing member of older adult group PrimeTime at Emmanuel Baptist Church, which provides fellowship for retired-age individuals. While she is in the prime of her life, her primary pressing concern was leaving a financial legacy for her family. Barbara attended the Exiting Egypt Conference, an annual socio-economic development conference that strives to provide a pathway to financial empowerment. She used the resources from the Estate Planning workshop to connect with professionals that assisted her with structuring her estate and making other financial investments for her loved ones.

Barbara story is just one illustration of the impact of Exiting Egypt. It provides conference participants, such as entrepreneurs, small business owners, educators, and health professionals, with tools and workshops that will enable them to lift themselves out of bondage, as the Israelites did so under the leadership of Moses. Building on its legacy, in 2020, the annual Exiting Egypt conference was held virtually with upwards of 150 participants and incorporated resources to address the social and mental health challenges that were exacerbated by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

South Africa Project

Lesego Pearl Nkosi participated in Emmanuel Baptist Church’s South African Children’s Ministry, which provided an 8-week summer program for 10 South African children and 2 educators. As a child, she was matched with her homestay mom Nicolle Munroe, and over that summer, Pearl along with the other South African children became a part of the EBC family. Our volunteer host families provided food, shelter, clothing, and education, not only to the program participants but also to their families back in South Africa. They are from Winterveldt, a large town in the Gauteng province of South Africa that has a population of 120,000 people. With the support and love of Nicolle and the larger EBC family, Pearl crossed the stage in April 2022 officially graduating with her Bachelors in Sociology (Minor in Psychology) from Nelson Mandela University in South Africa.

Building on the concept of self-sufficiency through education and training, the South African Project provides economic and environmentally sustainable support for local families in the Winterveldt community. This mission is based on 1 Peter 4:10 which says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms”.

There are (4) components to the South Africa Project:

  1. The Thaba School- Build an administrative building, medical clinic, and (4) classrooms to accommodate 30-40 students.

  2. Cooperative Bakery- Create a workspace where renewable energy will be utilized to bake bread to be sold in local markets creating up to 20 jobs in baking, marketing, sales, and distribution.

  3. Organic Vegetable Farm- Identify land for accusation to drudge for irrigation and bi-products. Sell vegetables in premium markets in Pretoria at premium prices creating jobs in agriculture, marketing, distribution for up to 20 people.

  4. Compressed Earth Block- Identify land or structure that can be used to manufacture fired blocks (bricks). The primary goal is to supply blocks at lower prices than competing local manufacturers.
